Welding Basics
Welding Basics is geared towards training individuals for welding careers in a production environment. Students will be introduced to the most common welding processes:
- Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick)
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)/Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW/MIG)
- Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG)
The focus of the course is MIG Welding in a production environment. This will include instruction in safety, material handling, print reading, and shop math.
Trainees will have the opportunity to gain industry-recognized credentials. Students can earn certificates through the American Welding Society’s SENSE Program as a Level 1 Welder. These certificates demonstrate proficiency in various welding topics. There is no additional cost for SENSE Certifications. (150 Hour Program)

Registration Process
This program requires an application and entrance exam.

Tuition $2,800
A $300 deposit is required to reserve your spot in this class.
- Tuition does not include steel toe work boots or welding helmet. These are the responsibility of the student to obtain. The approximate cost is $208 and is subject to change.
Admission Requirements
- A TABE score of 7.0 in reading and 7.0 in math*.
- A personal interview will be conducted.
- A valid high school diploma or equivalency.
- A valid NYS Driver’s License.
Employment Outlook
Demand for entry-level welders in the Western New York Region is high. Completion of the Welding Basics Program will provide you with the skills needed to work as a MIG or Stick Welder in a production environment. The majority of students in the welding program are employed in the industry by the end of the course. Entry-level welders can expect to make $18 to $20 per hour, with the potential for significant wage growth through additional training and experience. Erie 1 BOCES assists with resume writing and interview skills, along with job leads and other employment assistance.
*Exceptions to admission scores may be considered based on work history, prior education, personal interview, and employer recommendations.
