Mounted Horse Demonstration at Potter CTE Center
On a crisp fall day, the Potter Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center hosted an educational opportunity for two Criminal Justice classes: a mounted horse demonstration by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. This marks the third consecutive year that the Sheriff’s Office has partnered with Erie 1 BOCES to provide students with an in-depth look at the unique role of mounted peace officers.
Gathered on the lawn, students were captivated as two sheriff's deputies shared insights into their responsibilities and experiences as part of the mounted unit. Currently, there are ten mounted peace officers serving within the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. The deputies explained that their presence is commonly felt at major events throughout the community, including conventions, Buffalo Bills games, parades, and even solemn occasions like funerals.
The highlight of the event was a live demonstration showcasing how officers safely detain a suspect while mounted. The deputies skillfully illustrated the techniques and strategies involved, allowing students to witness firsthand the coordination and teamwork required in such operations.
This event not only provided valuable practical knowledge for aspiring law enforcement professionals but also strengthened the connection between local law enforcement and the community. Students left with a deeper appreciation for the mounted unit’s role and its significance in public safety and community engagement.
