  • Information and referral to other community resources for specialized or more extensive services.

Types of Positions

Classified Positions
Understanding Careers in Civil Service

The term “Civil Service” refers to employees selected and promoted based on a merit and seniority system, which may include varying types of examinations.

Civil Service careers come with incredible incentives that often exceed packages by private organizations. These incentives include an abundant benefits package, a steady income, job security, a wide variety of jobs, career advancement opportunities, above generous paid time off, paid federal holidays, NYS retirement plan, continuous professional development, dedicated leaders and so much more!

Classified positions are generally support staff positions in which candidates can be hired either from having taken a Civil Service Exam for that position OR they are hired from the General Public "provisionally.” Classified positions are all open to anyone that meets the minimum qualifications as defined on the job posting.

If a candidate meets the minimum qualifications, they may be interviewed, hired, and will sit for a civil service exam for that job title on a future date after their employment begins.

This is called a provisional hire.  Provisional hiring is a fairly common practice.

If you meet the minimum qualifications as defined on the job postings at Erie 1 BOCES, we invite you to apply.

Hiring from a Civil Service List

Classified positions can be filled from a list of eligible candidates resulting from an examination they took given for a specific job title. This examination may be a written test, performance test or evaluation of training and experience or some combination of other factors.

If a position becomes available, you have taken a civil service exam for that job title and you are an eligible candidate, you will be sent a letter by the Erie 1 BOCES Human Resources Services office to inform you of your status.

All Other Qualified candidates

The same positions do not immediately require that a qualified candidate take a Civil Service exam prior to employment. If a candidate meets the minimum qualifications as defined in the job posting, they may be interviewed, hired and will sit for an exam at a later time after employment begins. This is called a provisional hire.

Civil Service Exam Information

Civil service examinations are scheduled, and the resultant lists are administered by the NYS Department of Civil Service. The Department also administers the civil service exam system for several localities (e.g., counties and cities) within the state.

These exams are specific to a job or a class of jobs (for example, there might be a specific test for an air conditioning mechanic, but one clerical test might suit for 10 or 12 different titles) and are scheduled as a previous eligible list expires or diminishes as people are hired from it.

Certified and Licensed Positions

You must possess the proper certification or license as defined in the job posting to be qualified for the position. Applications are only accepted if the candidate holds the proper NYS certification OR can obtain prior to the commencement of employment.
