1,700 Eighth-Grade Students Partake in Taste of Tech

Eighth-grade students from across Western New York learned about 30 different career paths from high school students embarking on their own paths.

The 2018 "Taste of Tech" tour at the three BOCES career centers on Jan. 25 included hands-on activities. About 1,700 students in total attended the tours at the three regionally-based centers: Harkness, Kenton and Potter.

Around 300 students from Hamburg Middle School learned about careers through hands-on demonstrations by high school students already enrolled in the programs at Erie 1 BOCES Potter Career & Technical Center.

Students were able to rotate through several career education programs. Each program provided visitors with a safe hands-on event and/or demonstration. In addition to a scheduled facility tour, students got to choose what areas they wanted to see in more detail.

As part of public education, during the normal school day, Erie 1 BOCES offers 30 career and technical programs to high school students in Erie County. Students interested in learning more about how they can participate in various programs such as cybersecurity, aviation and digital media may speak with their school counselor.
