Lafayette alumnus honored as distinguished BOCES grad

Al Shammari SaifA Lafayette High School alumnus has been recognized by Erie 1 BOCES for his professional success after graduation.

Al Shammari Saif received one of three Distinguished Alumni awards as part of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) division’s Commitment to Education awards ceremony at Maryvale High School in June.

Saif is the owner of a successful barbershop, Al Ameer Cuts on Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. Aside from cutting hair, he oversees all business operations, including hiring and financial matters.

As a junior, Saif attended Erie 1 BOCES’ Cosmetology program at Potter Career & Technical Center in West Seneca, then transferred to the Barbering program at the Harkness Career & Technical Center in Cheektowaga his senior year. He received his barbering license shortly after graduating in 2017.

Cosmetology teacher Debra Gampietro praised Saif’s drive to succeed. He took the bus daily from Lafayette High School in Buffalo to attend class in West Seneca, where he was “always willing to learn,” she noted.

The Commitment to Education awards recognize businesses and alumni that demonstrate ongoing efforts to advance education across the Erie 1 BOCES CTE centers. Award recipients show a sustained involvement in the educational process and provide students with a better understanding of the relevance of school to real-world experiences.
