Providing leadership and supervision

Every district is required to have a physical education (PE) director to provide leadership and supervision for physical education instruction, intramural activities, and interschool athletic competitions.

In order to support the “islands of one” in each school district, Susan Cyrulik and Kate Huber from the instructional resource team at Erie 1 BOCES, invite the PE Directors to attend a quarterly meeting of the Physical Education Directors’ Consortium.

The focus of the consortium is on sharing best practices in curriculum, instruction, and assessment in physical education. Topics of discussion may include, but are not limited to; state education updates, training and deliverables (pre-assessments, data target setting, technology training, Common Core Literacy Standards as it relates to PE and health, etc.) adapted PE, regulations, and the PE profile.

The consortium provides the forum to discuss participant needs and action items. Participants are encouraged to bring district/curriculum relevant materials, current conversation topics needing input, and ideas to each meeting.

The goal of the January meeting was to share ideas for community businesses and organizations, available to partner with Erie 1 BOCES and school districts to bring unique programming to schools.

“Networking and learning about new resources is the focus,” stated Huber. “We have 19 districts involved, which includes Catholic and charter schools.”

Tara Scime, from Ballroom and Beyond, was invited to attend and show the group a sampling of the curriculum she offers for PE classes, grades K-12. Starpoint School District currently uses Ballroom and Beyond as part of their regular dance instruction, a program that could be replicated at other districts too. Scime taught a few basic steps to get the participants comfortable, the same steps that students would use while learning the Salsa and Mamba.

Also in attendance was Carolyn Blaine, from the YMCA of Greater Buffalo’s Camp Weona. She discussed outdoor education programs, winter weather programs (cross country skiing and snowshoeing), and extended an invitation to bring programming to schools or to host them at Camp Weona and Camp Tahigwa.

The next meeting of the PE Directors’ Consortium is from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 2 at the Erie 1 BOCES Education Campus. To register, call Sarah Cabarga at 821-7221.
