Special guests drop by school counselors meeting at Buffalo Zoo
Area high school counselors got a wild counselors at zootreat when they attended a professional development program at the Buffalo Zoo recently.

A snake and a vampire bat greeted attendees at the end of the session in the Education Department Building – safely handled by zoo docent Barbara Scholey.

The High School Counselors’ Association of Western New York put together the program in conjunction with Erie 1 BOCES.

In addition to the two animals, students in Erie 1 BOCES’ Zoo Wildlife and Conservation Careers program set up small exhibits for counselors to meet and speak with them. Mikayla Kolare, a senior at Cleveland Hill High School, accompanied Scholey with the snake and bat.

“It was a great opportunity to see firsthand what students are doing in their hands-on studies and what they’re actually learning,” noted Jody Corier, counselors at zoopresident of the High School Counselors’ Association of Western New York and a school counselor at Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES’ Ormsby Educational Center in East Aurora. “The students had the opportunity to give the counselors facts from their research.”

The counselors meeting – titled “Navigating CDOS and Work-Based Learning” – highlighted breakthrough resources for career planning to help participating districts meet compliance standards in updated counseling regulations. It also included an overview of Erie 1 BOCES’ New Vision programs, as well as its zoo programs.

Michael Candella served as the keynote speaker. Candella is the CDOS coordinator for the Clarence and Lancaster school districts.
