The Many Faces of Newcomers
New York State Education Department held a teachers’ institute on “The Many Faces of Newcomers.”  Teachers from the Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo areas convened at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens in Depew. In total, 235 teachers of English language learners participated in the sessions.

Lissette Colón-Collins, assistant commissioner for NYSED OBE-WL, spoke to attendees about ensuring equal educational opportunities for English language learners. Laura Ascenzi-Moreno, investigator with the CUNY- New York State Initiative on Emergent Bilinguals, and Helaine Marshall, director of language education programs with Long Island University, also presented.

Each speaker touched upon inclusion and stressed the importance of ongoing, two-way, relationships to help students achieve.

The event was co-sponsored by Mid-State RBE-RN at OCM BOCES, Mid-West RBE-RN at Monroe 2 - Orleans BOCES, West Region RBE-RN at Erie 1 BOCES, New York State Teachers of English to Students of Other Languages and the NYS Association of Bilingual Education.
